Rule 20 Certified in Death Penalty Cases by Ohio Supreme Court |

In the state of Ohio, only lawyers who are qualified and registered by the Ohio Supreme Court may defend an indigent person in death penalty cases. The law further requires that all death penalty defendants have at least two attorneys (lead and co-counsel) who are certified by the Ohio Supreme Court to try capital cases.
Lisa Wenzel Wells is Rule 20 Certified by the Ohio Supreme Court as co-counsel for death penalty cases having satisfied the following requirements:
- admitted to the practice of laws in Ohio or admitted to practice pro hac vice;
- at least three years of civil or criminal litigation or appellate experience;
- specialized training, as approved by the committee, on subjects that will assist counsel in the defense of persons accused of capital crimes in the two years prior to making application;
- at least one of the following qualifications:
- experience as co-counsel in one murder or aggravated murder trial;
- experience as lead counsel in one first-degree felony jury trial;
- experience as lead or co-counsel in at least two felony jury or civil jury trials in a court of common pleas in the three years prior to making application.
